Car Rental Information

Car Rental Info
sea_shells_png_1218370.png

Remember that we drive on the left!

We encourage you to rent your car soon so that you have your choice of vehicles. While 4-wheel drive is not necessary to reach any of our homes or to go to most of the beaches, it is the most popular.

You can rent a car on either St. Thomas or St. John. If you rent on St Thomas you pick up your car at the airport or nearby, load your luggage, drive about 30 minutes to Red Hook, take the 30 minute car barge ride to St John and drive directly to your villa, where we will meet you.

To rent on St John, you taxi from the airport to Red Hook, take the 20 minute ferry to St John, collect your luggage and rent your car there.

Renting on St Thomas offers the ease of handling luggage just once and less exposure to other people in a taxi or ferry. We now have three barge companies so there is a boat almost every half hour. However, if one or more of the car barges is out of service, which does happen, you may have a longer wait for the next barge.

sea_shells_png_1218370.png

Renting a Vehicle on St. John

The car companies on St. John are small and independently owned with a limited number of vehicles, each business with different hours and policies. Choose a company that is a short walk from the ferry dock or one that will meet you at the dock and drive you to their office. If you are walking, you may wish to leave one person with the luggage at the dock, while another person checks out the vehicle, and then circles back to pick up the person and luggage. Here is a list of a few of the rental companies that have worked well for our guests.

St. John Based Agencies:

  1. C&C Car and Jeep Rental (340) 693-8164 or https://www.cccarrental.com

  2. St. John Car Rental (340) 776-6103 or https://www.stjohncarrental.com/

  3. Courtesy Car & Jeep Rental (340) 776-6650 or https://www.courtesycarrental.com

  4. Sunshine’s Jeep Rental (340) 690-1786 or https://www.sunshinesjeeprental.com

  5. Aqua Blu (340) 776-6715 or https://www.aquablucarrental.com

  6. Slim Man’s Jeep Rental (508) 932-2737 or https://www.slimmansjeeprental.com/

Questions to ask when making arrangements:

  1. Will you meet me at the dock, or are you a short walk from the ferry?

  2. What arrangements can we make if my flight is delayed or I arrive late?

  3. Do you offer free in-town parking to your customers?

Here are the schedules for ferries to St John and a good overview map. https://www.vina.com/travel/virgin-islands-ferry-schedules/st john/

sea_shells_png_1218370.png

Renting a Vehicle on St. Thomas

The last barge from St Thomas to St John runs at 7 pm. Allow 2 hours to get your luggage, pick up your car and drive to Red Hook and wait in line. Ideally you will catch a much earlier barge.

On your departure day, allow for at least 2 hours for the barge trip, drive to the airport and dropping off your car. The first barge is at 7:30 (or 6am and 6:15am on weekdays). However, choosing an afternoon flight will make for a more relaxing departure. Be sure to check out this schedule in making your plans:  https://www.vinow.com/travel/virgin-islands-ferry-schedules/stjohnbarge/

St Thomas Based Agencies:

  1. Budget (340) 776-5774 https://www.budgetstt.com

  2. Avis (340) 774-1468 https://www.avis.com/en/locations/cv/saint-thomas/stt

  3. Amalie Car Rental (340) 774-0688 https://www.amaliecar.com/home

Questions to ask before you reserve (especially if you choose another agency):

  1. Is the vehicle allowed to go to St. John?

  2. Will there be insurance coverage on St. John and the barge?

  3. If I have car troubles on St. John, will you provide service to the vehicle there? Will there be an additional service charge? What are the costs if I do not accept your coverage?

  4. Will you meet us at the airport?

  5. What arrangements can we make if my flight is delayed?

Once you have arrived at the Red Hook dock, the car barges are located to the left of the dock parking lot. As you pull into the parking lot, there is a booth that requires a $3.00-$4.00 port fee. Barges generally leave on the hour and the half-hour up through 7:00pm. You can either purchase a roundtrip ticket for $65.00 per vehicle or a one-way ticket for $50.00. There are now three different barge companies, each with a different schedule. A one way ticket will give you the flexibility of taking the barge on your return leg that best suits your time schedule for airport departure. Or, for your return trip you may be able to make a reservation (if it's done 3 days in advance and paid by credit card).   For more information and the ferry schedule, please visit this page: http://www.vinow.com/travel/virgin-islands-ferry-schedules/

Insurance

Before you rent a vehicle, you may want to find out the coverage provided by your home auto insurance policy and your credit card if used to rent a vehicle in the Virgin Islands. Some rental companies require you to have a copy of your credit card coverage if you choose not to purchase their insurance.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ
  • Do I need a passport?

    • If you are a U.S. citizen a passport is not required, but it still serves as the best identification when traveling. Otherwise, you must be prepared to show evidence of citizenship when departing the islands, such as a raised-seal birth certificate and government-issued photo ID. If you are not a U.S. citizen, then a passport issued by your country of origin is required.

    • If you wish to travel to the British Virgin Islands, you will be required to present a passport to the agents at Customs.

  • What kind of sunscreen, if any, is environmentally friendly?

    • Wear protective clothing. For still exposed areas use lotions with only titanium oxide and zinc oxide as the active ingredients. Most other active ingredients commonly found in sunscreens have been shown to be harmful to both humans and the reef and are now illegal to use in the Virgin Islands.

    • Effective March 30, 2020, The US Virgin Islands' full ban on sunscreens containing the Toxic 3 Os … Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, and Octocrylene as well as sprays, powders and SPF 50+ went into effect.

  • What currency is in the US Virgin Islands?

    • The currency is the U.S. dollar. Automated teller machines (ATMs) can be found throughout all three islands. Most establishments accept credit cards and traveler's checks. The most widely accepted credit cards are Visa and MasterCard.

  • Will my cell phone work there?

    • Most standard stateside cellular phone providers work in the Virgin Islands. Check with your provider before you travel. In some locations on St. John, you can pick up the BVI networks, which would incur expensive roaming charges. Make sure you turn 'data roaming' off.

  • We intend to do business while visiting, so reliable internet is important to us.  How good is your internet?

    • In the last few years, we lived at Pebble Cove for many months doing business, streaming, and hosting or attending Zoom meetings without problems. On the rare occasion that the internet does go out, we use the phone as a hotspot for our computer. It is a good idea to keep your phone and computer charged in case of a power outage, which happens sometimes. We suggest bringing a small portable phone charger as a backup if needed. Otherwise, the internet service is good at both houses.

  • What is the time zone?

    • Atlantic Standard Time. During the spring and summer months, we are on the same time as the U.S. East Coast. When the clocks fall back in the autumn and winter, the USVI remains an hour ahead.

  • What is the legal drinking age?

    • 18, however, they cannot transfer bottles of alcohol back to the mainland.

  • Is it safe to drink the water?

    • The water is safe to drink at most establishments. Pebble Cove offers a special tap for filtered drinking water at the kitchen sink. Bottled water is available in stores and at restaurants if you wish to purchase it. It is a great idea to take water with you when going to the beach, driving around, and sightseeing – it gets hot here and it is necessary to keep hydrated.

  • Is there an admission fee at the beaches?

    • St. John beaches do not have an admission fee. The one exception is Trunk Bay.

  • Are the ferries and barges reliable?

  • Any particular taboos I should be aware of when visiting the Virgin Islands?

    • A long-standing tradition in the Virgin Islands is greeting someone before any transaction of any kind starts. It is strongly recommended to say ‘Good Morning’ or ‘Good Afternoon’ before asking ‘how much is this’ or ‘how do I get to such and such a place.’ This simple greeting will get you farther than saying, ‘Excuse me, how much is this?’

    • Virgin Islanders are quite traditional, so it is a law that visitors must wear cover-ups and shirts in public places. Additionally, it is considered rude to be scantily clothed in stores and restaurants. Visitors clad in only a bikini top and shorts (ladies) or bareback with shorts (gents) are likely to receive a surly response from customer service in stores. Please be respectful and wear shirts and/or beach cover-ups when going to places in public, aside from being at the beach and pool.

  • Where can I get groceries and alcohol?

    • Starfish Market, St. John Gourmet Market, Dolphin Market: Cruz Bay and Coral Bay, Calabash Market (Coral Bay)

    • You can buy alcohol in any grocery store.

Wildlife Conservation

Hi New Friend!

I'm Fernando and this is my best friend, Javier. We're locals here and love to see all the people enjoying our island. We don't have very good manners and like to walk in the middle of the road, so please drive slowly, as you never know when you'll see us or our other friends around the island. To help keep us safe, you can avoid feeding us human food, which makes our bellies hurt, and wait to take our pictures when we're standing safely away from the road. We appreciate your cooperation in keeping us away from harm. We can't wait to see you around the island!

Happy Travels!

Love,

Fernando and Javier

Hello, Fellow Swimmers!

My name is Sebastian. I am SO excited you donned your snorkel gear to come to explore the oceans with me! I have a few ocean rules before you hop in to keep us both safe. I’d love it if you could keep a distance of six feet or more from me. I get stressed if you get too close or touch us. It can throw off our natural behaviors and lead to major health issues. On the same flipper, if I swim towards you, please move away to keep that distance. When I’m stressed, I want to swim away, but if you just float nearby and calmly watch me from a distance, I’m more likely to continue to eat and swim around. Just like you, I need air to survive, and sometimes when I go up for air, there’s somebody above me. It’s scary and makes it dangerous for me. One last thing that is dangerous for you and me is boats speeding around. Some of my friends have been killed by reckless boaters, and I don’t want that to happen to others. So, please go slow to avoid hitting me, my friends, and your fellow humans.

I am so grateful for your assistance in keeping us safe!

Happy Snorkeling!

Love,

Sebastian

GREAT LOCATION. SPECTACULAR SETTING!!

Linda’s place is incredibly well situated for fantastic snorkeling and convenient to restaurants in coral bay. Beautiful views from the main floor and wrap around deck. Great outdoor shower for rinsing off after your snorkel adventures right off the private beach in front.
